National Castles Program
Like HelloMagyar reportedthe development, which is part of the Nemzeti Kastélyprogram és Nemzeti Várprogram (National Castles Program), will be completed by autumn this year, with a budget of over HUF 2.844 million (7.4 million euros), partly from EU funds and partly from national resources.
The main objective of developing the castle for tourism purposes is to create a worthy national memorial site as the legacy of Count István Széchenyi.
During the reconstruction works, the old mansion, the Széchenyi wing, the flower house, the Pandur houses and the castle park were renovated. In the two guardhouses at the main entrance to the park (the Pandur houses), a ticket office, an information point, a museum shop and toilets have been built.
In the castle park, among other things, the paths of the Baroque parterre have been restored, a fountain and a themed playground have been created. The gardens have been landscaped with seating, bins, light fixtures, an irrigation system and a new walled fence to the north. An exhibition with interactive tools will soon be inaugurated in the Old Manor and the Széchenyi wing.
In the Old Manor building, the mechanical and electrical systems were renovated and a fire protection system was installed. In the Széchenyi wing, the refurbished service rooms were demolished.
On the ground floor, there is a children’s nursery, while the south wing houses offices, warehouses, staff rooms, a server center and a security room. In addition to the modernization of service units and bathrooms, the original space with its large glass surfaces has been retained, suitable for events and exhibitions.
The construction and finishing works of the buildings and the castle park were carried out by a joint consortium of Fertőd Construction and Services Kft. and ZÁEV Zrt.
According to the statement, the former castle of Count István Széchenyi is one of the most outstanding and emblematic values of our country in terms of national history, and since the time of Széchenyi there has never been such a example of this type of large-scale development of the castle complex. The first stone of the project was laid in January 2021.
